ENDOSCOPIC PROCEDURES ADDITIONAL PROCEDURES THAT MAY BE PERFORMED IN OUR CENTER AT THE TIME OF YOUR UPPER OR LOWER ENDOSCOPY. ESOPHAGEAL DILITATION If you have noticed some difficulty with swallowing or if your physician finds a narrowing of your esophagus during your Upper Endoscopy, he will most often want to treat that area during your procedure. This is done by sliding a soft rubber dilator down past this narrow area to gently stretch it. Most patients celebrate in the next few days by eating their favorite meals with ease. POLYPECTOMY It is fairly common for physicians to find small polyps (or tissue growths) on the lining of the gastrointestinal track. These polyps are usually benign but can cause bleeding or other problems if left in place, so it is wise to have them removed. Your physician will usually remove any polyps he sees at the time of your procedure. This is done with the aid of tiny instruments passed through the endoscope. The tissue will then be sent to the lab to be tested. Your physician will discuss the results with you at the time of your follow-up visit. DOUBLE PROCEDURES There are occasions when it is necessary to investigate both your upper and lower GI tract. This can be accomplished safely and efficiently at our Center in a cost-effective manner. Instructions generally remain the same as for a single procedure, however the time spent in our unit will of course be slightly longer.
